Hiring Managers Are Checking You Out

According to a Jump Start Social Media survey that polled 100 hiring managers at small, mid-sized and large companies:

Three-quarters of hiring managers check LinkedIn to research the credentials of job candidates.  Of the hiring managers surveyed, 75% use LinkedIn, 48% use Facebook, and 26% use Twitter to research candidates before making a job offer.

“Social media is not only a great networking tool, it’s also a way for employers to perform reference checks on job candidates,” said Veronica Fielding, president of Digital Brand Expressions and its social media service for consumers, Jump Start Social Media. “Because LinkedIn is the most professionally oriented of the three, it tends to attract hiring managers who are doing due diligence.”

Why You Need To Screen Your Vendors

A lot of businesses rely on vendors to supply labor, parts, or services on an ongoing basis. But, depending upon third parties can be risky, even if necessary. If, for some reason, one of your main vendors goes out of business or conducts business in an unprofessional manner, it can expose your own company to unnecessary risk. That’s why it is imperative that you thoroughly screen each of your vendors and perform background checks on them. Today, I’ll highlight the problems that can occur if you don’t.

Vendor Screening Ensures Consistency

When your company hires vendors to supply parts or labor, you have an expectation that they will deliver consistently. If they fail, it can place your company in an awkward position. After all, any interruption in your daily operations can have a severe impact on your business. Your customers may lose faith in your ability to deliver.

By doing background checks on your vendors, you can determine how dependable they’ll be. Have they employed people who have a criminal record? Do your vendors have employees with a substance abuse problem? Have other companies filed complaints or lawsuits against your vendors? If so, why? Are any of your vendors on the brink of insolvency?

Any of these issues can have devastating results for your company. For example, a vendor who supplies important materials to your business, and files for bankruptcy, can bring your operations to a grinding halt. Or, a vendor to whom you’ve subcontracted for labor may place ex-convicts on site and expose your business to liability.

Background Checks On Vendors

Your company needs to screen vendors and conduct background checks to ensure that they are reliable, consistent, and won’t expose your company to costly lawsuits. This due diligence should include criminal checks, credit checks, a review of DMV records (if you’re hiring drivers), and verification of licenses, permits, and certifications. It is the only way to avoid hiring a vendor who may potentially lead your company toward disaster.

Establish vendor screening protocols as soon as possible. If you don’t have the hiring staff available to conduct extensive background checks on your vendors, consider partnering with an experienced screening service.

Background Checks For The Education Industry

One of tragic ironies of the education industry is that it often fails to properly screen teachers. For example, a study conducted in 2007 found that most Illinois teachers who were hired prior to 2004 were exempt from FBI background checks. These educators have a dangerous level of exposure to children. Consider that many of them could easily hide a criminal past.

Chilling Examples

Newspapers are filled with hundreds of cases in which educators are hired, but are unsuitable to have exposure to children. For example, a high school teacher named Jaime Katheryn Steen was recently jailed for distributing pornographic pictures to her students. George Tolbert, convicted of sexually abusing 2 children, served 4 years in jail, only to earn his teaching credentials and teach for 10 years. Chassappasi Rain, convicted of shooting 2 people in 1978, earned his teaching certificate in 1990 and found a teaching job in the Chicago Public School System.

Comprehensive background checks should have been performed on each of these people prior to hiring them as educators. By failing to screen them properly and allowing them into the classroom, school administrators are gambling with the safety of the students in their care.

Pre-Employment Screening For Educators

As the number of criminal cases involving teachers continues to escalate, state governments are starting to require pre-employment background checks. The problem is that the scope of these background checks is usually inadequate. They’re often limited to running an applicant’s name through an FBI database and doing a child abuse registry search. Not only is this approach plagued with problems (i.e. misspelled names, out of date profiles, etc.), but they often fail to uncover past criminal convictions.

School administrators need to implement more thorough pre-employment screening protocols. Even if funding seems to be a obstacle, it’s important to realize that properly screening teachers and conducting wide-ranging criminal background checks is relatively inexpensive. In fact, it can usually be done for less than what that teacher will earn during their first day on the job.

Limiting Risk And Protecting Students

Doing the bare minimum when screening educators is no longer a viable option. There is simply too much risk to the safety of the students. Allowing convicted felons to gain all-day access to children is a recipe for disaster. In fact, the education industry has been buffeted by high-profile incidents for years. It’s time for school administrators to take control by conducting extensive background checks on all personnel.
